       Does Your Child Have ADHD?

Children with ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, better known as ADHD, is a disorder that affects millions of children. A statistic published by the Centers for Disease Control and prevention found that as many as 11 percent of children (approximately 6.4 million) between the ages of 4 to 17 may struggle with this disorder. With so many school-aged children being diagnosed, it's a good idea as a parent to learn as much as possible about children with ADHD and how it can be treated or managed successfully with the help of your pediatrician.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a developmental disorder that causes children to be overly rambunctious, hyperactive and distracted. Children who have this issue lack focus and have strained relationships with peers and siblings. It can be most concerning if a child with ADHD doesn't pay attention while in public, such as crossing streets or running after a ball without watching his surroundings. Boys are about three times more likely to be diagnosed with this disorder as children.

Symptoms of ADHD in Children

Children who have ADHD have a difficult time concentrating and performing normally. ADHD can make it difficult for children to excel in school and social settings. Common symptoms may include:
  • inability to pay attention in class or to parents
  • General problems listening or eharing others
  • Problems staying organized
  • Laziness or procrastination
  • Forgetfulness
  • Excessive activity or fidgeting (cant stay still for a moment)
  • Talking too much (especially at inappropriate times)
Some people attribute these activities to normal impulsive or curious childhood behavior, but when it becomes uncontrollable for parents it may be a wise idea to schedule an evaluation with a  pediatrician.

Solutions for Children with ADHD

The commonly accepted treatment for children with ADHD is behavioral therapy, where the child and his parent are taught techniques for better managing the hyperactivity and inability to concentrate. In severe cases, the doctor may [prescribe medication. Some experts believe that changing a child's diet for the better (such as eliminating sugar and giving him more vitamins) and providing positive reinforcement can also help.

Wart Removal Treatments

You've probably heard the old wives tale that a frog can give you warts. Of course, we know that is far from the truth. But while handling frogs and toads wont give you warts, your child can get warts from school showers, locker rooms and community pools if they are barefoot.

Warts are harmless and will often go away on their own without treatment. Of course, it can take up to a couple of years for warts to disappear; however, if the wart is embarrassing or in an uncomfortable area, we can also easily remove the wart right here in our office.

There are at -home measures you can try first to remove the warts. This includes over-the-counter liquid or gel medications that contain chemicals like salicylic acid, which can dissolve the growth over time. If over-the-counter treatments aren't providing the results you had hoped for, or if your child has a weakened immune system, its important that you seek our medical care right away.

Some of the ways a wart can be removed includes:
  • Freezing off the wart with liquid nitrogen
  • Burning the wart with a special laser
  • Using an acid to destroy the wart
  • Injecting the wart with a special medication that can either kill the virus (in more severe cases) or boost the body's immune response to fight off the virus

Getting rid of warts does take patience. It's not very often that the wart will be removed in just one treatment. And there is no single treatment that is more effective than another because everyone's bodies are different. But one thing is for certain: The wart removal treatments you receive from our pediatricians are much more effective than any over-the-counter wart treatments you may use. Sometimes our treatments can also be used in conjunction with at home remedies to speed up the removal process.

Physical Exams and Sports Physicals

We all know the importance of keeping our children and teens fit and active. It's always a plus when they would rather spend time running and playing outside than watching TV. Plus, participating in activities like school sports is also a great way for your child to socialisze and make friends. However, in order to be part of a team, every child must complete a pre-preparation examination (PPE), better known as a sports physical. Sports physicals are required for all children planning to participate in school sports programs, club sports, intermural leagues, as well as those children who are making changing their fitness routines.

What is involved?

The sports physical consists of a thorough background of the patient's medical history and a physical examination. The main purpose of a sports physical is to evaluate overall health and physical wellbeing, and asses injury risk and your child's current level of fitness. During the sports physical, your doctor will be able to pinpoint any conditions are discovered during the examination, your doctor will take the appropriate measures to ensure that your child's condition is properly treated to avoid future complications.

When Should Sports Physicals be completed?

A sports physical should be completed six weeks before the new sports season; however, this can vary a bit, so it's always best to talk to your child's coach or physical education instructor before setting up the appointment. Be sure to also bring along your child's completed health and immunization history.

Once the sports physical is complete, your doctor will stamp any necessary medical that your child needs to play sports and we will also provide some education materials on how to keep your child safe and happy while out on the field.
